Ask any experienced grower which single mistake destroys more cannabis plants than pests, light burn and nutrient issues combined, and the answer is always the same: watering. Not the light. Not the fertiliser. Watering. Overwatering in particular is by a wide margin the number-one cause of failed indoor grows — and almost every symptom it produces (drooping, yellowing, slow growth, wilting) looks so much like something else that beginners keep chasing the wrong problem for weeks.
Why watering is far harder than it looks
Most first-time growers think of watering as "putting water into a pot". In reality every single watering event simultaneously affects: root oxygen supply, nutrient uptake, growth speed, root architecture, the microbiome in the substrate, pH stability, salt build-up and — ultimately — your final yield. Get watering right and everything else becomes easier. Get it wrong and no light schedule, no premium nutrient line and no expensive genetics can save the grow.

How cannabis actually takes up water
Water does not just "soak into" the plant. It moves through a chain: fine root hairs pull water in by osmosis, the xylem transports it up the stem, the leaves lose it through transpiration at the stomata, and that continuous evaporation creates the suction that pulls the next drop up from the roots. Photosynthesis, cell pressure, cooling and nutrient delivery all depend on that flow being uninterrupted.

Two things about this chain matter enormously in practice. First: the roots only take up water while they can also breathe. Second: transpiration (and therefore water demand) is not constant. A hot day with 40 % RH and 900 PPFD can double the plant's water use compared with a cool morning at 65 % RH. When should you water? Forget the calendar.
"Every two days" is the single most damaging piece of advice in the whole hobby. A seedling in week 2 might need 100 ml every five days; the same plant in week 7 in a 20 L pot might need 3 L every 30 hours. A fixed schedule cannot possibly match that. Learn these five signals instead, in order of reliability:
- Pot weight (the lift test) — the single most reliable trigger, used by every pro.
- Finger test — push a finger 2–3 cm into the substrate near the edge; damp = wait, dry = water.
- Substrate moisture meter — useful in coco/soil, but calibrate against pot weight.
- The plant itself — slight leaf droop just before lights-off is normal; sustained droop 2–3 h into the day-cycle is a signal.
- Root development and pot size — the bigger the root ball relative to the pot, the faster the dry-back.

How much water is the right amount?
"One litre per plant" is another myth. The right volume depends on pot size, plant size, substrate, climate, VPD, PPFD and root development — but there is one rule that is always true: when you do water, water enough to fully saturate the root zone and produce 10–20 % runoff. Small daily splashes never rehydrate the deep root ball, and they leave salts to accumulate in the bottom third of the pot where the roots try to grow.

What is "runoff" and why does it matter?
Runoff is the water that drains out of the bottom of the pot after you have watered. In soil, 10 % runoff is enough. In coco you want 15–20 % every single watering — coco does not naturally buffer salts the way soil does, so the runoff is your only way to flush accumulated fertiliser and reset EC in the root zone. In hydro, everything is runoff by definition — the entire reservoir cycles past the roots continuously.

Soil
Soil is the most forgiving substrate because it has real cation-exchange capacity and holds water for days. Your job is not to keep it moist — your job is to let it dry back properly between waterings so the roots get an oxygen cycle. A healthy soil grow often looks under-watered to a beginner. That is the point.
Coco coir
Coco is technically a hydroponic medium that only pretends to be soil. It holds almost no nutrients on its own and drains fast. In late flower, a 15 L coco pot in a hot tent can need 3 L of feed every single day, sometimes split into 2–3 events. The upside: coco is almost impossible to overwater if you feed at the correct EC and get 15–20 % runoff every time.
Hydroponics
In DWC or NFT, watering is not really watering anymore — you manage a nutrient reservoir. What matters is reservoir temperature (18–20 °C), dissolved oxygen (an airstone that never stops), pH stability (5.5–6.1) and EC. Get any one of those wrong for 24 hours and you can lose an entire grow to root rot. It is the highest-yield, highest-skill route.
Watering in every growth stage
Seedling (week 1–2)
Tiny roots, huge risk of drowning. Water with 20–50 ml of pH-adjusted water in a ring 2–3 cm around the stem, never onto the stem itself. Keep humidity at 65–75 % so the seedling transpires less and depends less on root uptake. Overwatering at this stage is the number-one killer of first grows — the leaves look sad, the beginner "gives it a drink", and it dies.
Vegetative stage
The plant is now building leaves and roots aggressively. Water volumes climb every week. Aim for a wet–dry cycle of roughly 3–5 days in soil, 1–2 days in coco. This is the stage where the lift test truly pays off: the pot weight difference between wet and dry becomes obvious.
Pre-flower and stretch (week 1–3 of 12/12)
The plant can double or triple in size in three weeks. Transpiration explodes, and so does water demand. If watering intervals were 3 days at flip, they may be 36 hours by end of stretch.
Peak flower (week 4–7)
The plant is now moving huge volumes of water and nutrients into buds. Do not reduce watering here — a common beginner mistake. Buds need water. Keep the wet–dry cycle strict and check runoff EC weekly.
Flush / final week
In soil and coco, switch to plain pH-corrected water for the last 7–10 days. In hydro, drop EC to ~0.4 mS/cm. The goal is not "cleaner smoke" — the goal is to burn off residual mobile nutrients so the plant metabolises its own reserves and finishes cleanly.

Overwatering vs. underwatering: how to tell them apart
This is the single most confusing part of watering, because the symptoms look almost identical. Both produce drooping leaves, both produce yellowing, both stall growth. The trap: the treatment is the exact opposite. "Give it a drink" to a drowning plant is a death sentence.

Root rot: the point of no return
If overwatering continues long enough, root hairs die, anaerobic bacteria take over, and the classic sour-swamp smell appears. At this point the plant looks nutrient-deficient (yellowing, purpling, deficiencies everywhere) but the real problem is 15 cm below the substrate surface. Emergency response: stop watering entirely, punch extra drainage holes, do not fertilise, and if in hydro drop reservoir temp and add beneficial bacteria (e.g. Hydroguard). - Temperature — every +3 °C roughly doubles evaporation.

The biology of roots — the part almost nobody explains
Cannabis roots do two things at the same time: they pull water and nutrients IN, and they exchange gases OUT. That second job is what beginners forget. Root cells respire — they burn sugar with oxygen to produce energy, just like leaves. When the substrate is saturated for too long, that oxygen is gone. The root hairs stop working within hours, the microbiome flips from beneficial (Trichoderma, mycorrhiza) to anaerobic (Pythium, Fusarium), and root rot begins.
