    Since Germany's partial legalisation on 1 April 2024, private adults may cultivate a maximum of three flowering cannabis plants for personal use. Other jurisdictions apply their own limits — always verify local law before you start.     1. Why we train cannabis at all

    Left alone, a cannabis plant grows like a small Christmas tree. A single dominant apex — the main cola — sits at the top and hoards the plant's hormones, light and energy. Every side branch below is genetically capable of producing a full-size bud, but is chemically suppressed and physically shaded. The result: one thick cola on top, dozens of airy popcorn buds below, and a lot of wasted potential.

    Training changes the geometry. By bending, cutting or tying the plant, you break the light monopoly of the top and lift every side branch into direct light. Ten to twenty branches that would otherwise be popcorn become main-cola-size buds. The plant still uses the same amount of nutrients and electricity — it simply converts them into flower instead of hierarchy.

    This is why yield uplift from training is not linear with effort. A well-executed LST can add 40–80 % yield in the same tent with the same light. Adding topping brings you to +80–150 %. A properly SCROG'd single plant under a good LED can outproduce three untrained plants of the same genetics. The lever is light distribution, and training is the tool that pulls it.

    2. The biology behind training — apical dominance, auxins and light

    Almost no other article explains this, and it is the reason every technique in this guide works. Understand the biology once and you will never memorise a rule again — you will derive it.

    Apical dominance and auxins

    The shoot tip — the apex — produces plant hormones called auxins (primarily IAA, indole-3-acetic acid). Auxins flow downward through the stem and suppress the growth of lateral buds below. The higher the auxin concentration in a node, the more its side shoots are held back. This is called apical dominance, and it is why an untouched cannabis plant channels almost all of its vegetative energy into one leading cola.

    How every training method breaks the monopoly

    Every training technique on the planet works by manipulating auxin distribution. Topping physically removes the apex, eliminating the auxin source and promoting the two nodes below to co-dominant tops. LST bends the apex sideways so it is no longer the highest point — the plant reads other branches as new apices and redistributes auxins to them. Supercropping crushes the internal fibres of a branch so auxin transport is temporarily disrupted. SCROG uses a horizontal net to keep every branch tip at the same height, forcing the plant to treat all of them as apices simultaneously.

    If you only learn one technique from this entire guide, learn LST. It is the gentlest, most forgiving, most universally applicable method — and per hour invested it produces the highest yield return of anything on the list. LST works on every plant type (photoperiodic and autoflower), in every tent size, at every skill level.

    What LST actually does

    You use soft plant ties, coated wire or Velcro strips to bend branches outward and downward, away from the plant's centre. The moment the apex is no longer the highest point, the plant redistributes auxins toward the branches that are now at the top. Every side shoot lifts, thickens and becomes a viable cola.

    When to start and how to do it

    1. Start as soon as branches are flexible enough to bend without snapping — typically from node 4 onwards.
    2. Bend the main stem sideways to the rim of the pot. Tie low, tie wide, tie soft. Never let a tie cut into the stem.
    3. Each week, tuck any new vertical growth back outward. The goal is a flat, plate-like canopy where every top sits at the same height.
    4. Continue LST through the stretch phase (the first 2 weeks of flower). Stop adding new ties from flower week 3 onward — the branches are becoming brittle and lignified.
    5. Combine gently with defoliation once the canopy is dense enough to shade the lower third.

    Common LST mistakes

    • Using thin wire or zip ties that cut into the thickening stem — always use soft, flat, wide material.
    • Bending too aggressively in one session — split stems are common. Bend a little, wait 24 h, bend more.
    • Stopping too early — LST is not a one-off event; it is a daily-to-weekly discipline until the stretch ends.
    • Only tying the main stem — the yield gain comes from spreading every side branch, not just the leader.

    Pros

    • Works on autoflowers and photoperiodics.
    • No recovery time — the plant does not lose vegetative days.
    • Zero risk of stress-induced hermaphroditism when done correctly.
    • Cheap: ties or wire cost almost nothing.

    Cons

    • Requires patience and consistency; not a one-time job.
    • Cannot fully replace topping if you want a very tall plant to stay short.
    • Anchoring points (holes in fabric pot, tent poles) need planning in advance.

    5. High Stress Training (HST): topping, FIM, supercropping, mainlining, fluxing

    HST is where you deliberately damage the plant to reshape it. Done at the right time on a healthy plant, HST produces the biggest structural gains of any training family. Done wrong — on a stressed, sick or autoflowering plant — it costs you the harvest. Every technique below shares the same rule: no HST without full recovery time before flower.

    Topping

    The classic. Wait until the plant has 5–6 true nodes and is visibly vigorous. Use sterilised, sharp scissors. Cut cleanly above the chosen node, leaving 0.5 cm of stem above the two new co-dominant shoots. Give the plant 5–7 days of pure recovery — no transplant, no defoliation, no nutrient increase — and watch the two nodes below explode. Top the resulting mains again a few weeks later and you have 4, then 8, then 16 tops.

    FIM (Fuck-I-Missed)

    A pinch of only the topmost cluster of new leaves instead of a full topping cut. Done well, FIM can produce 4+ new tops from a single node. Done badly, it produces a mangled apex that dies back. FIM is a lower-recovery alternative to topping but has a much higher failure rate — use it only when you already understand how the shoot tip behaves.

    Supercropping

    You pinch a branch between thumb and forefinger and gently roll it until you feel the internal fibres give way without breaking the outer skin. The branch bends 90° and, over the next 3–5 days, forms a hard knuckle at the bend. The knuckle transports water and nutrients more efficiently than the original stem, and the branch behind the knuckle thickens dramatically. Supercropping is the best tool for taming a single runaway branch, and for late-veg canopy leveling when LST is no longer enough.

    Mainlining / Manifold

    A systematic sequence of toppings that produces a perfectly symmetrical starting hub with 2, then 4, then 8 evenly-spaced mains. Every cola grows at the exact same distance from the roots, so nutrients and hormones distribute perfectly evenly. Mainlining costs 3–4 weeks of extra veg time and only works on photoperiodics, but the result is the most professional-looking, highest-per-plant-yield structure in cultivation.

    Fluxing

    The most extreme photoperiodic technique. Mainlining is combined with horizontal weaving so the entire plant becomes a flat, symmetrical fan of many equal colas. Fluxing produces spectacular yields per plant but takes 6–8 weeks of extra veg and unforgiving execution. Not a beginner method.

    6. SCROG, SOG and canopy management

    SCROG — the Screen of Green

    Stretch a horizontal trellis net (typically 7×7 cm or 10×10 cm) 20–25 cm above the soil. As branches grow up through the net, tuck each one back down and to the side — the net becomes the canopy. By the time flowering starts, every square holds one bud site at the same distance from the light. SCROG is the single best endgame for a small tent with 1–3 plants.

    1. Install the net above the pots — fix it to the tent poles, never to the plants.
    2. Top the plants once or twice during veg to build a wide structure before you SCROG.
    3. Once branches reach 10–15 cm above the net, tuck them horizontally into the next square.
    4. Stop tucking when you flip to 12/12. The stretch will fill every square automatically.
    5. Defoliate aggressively below the net — the lower canopy gets no light anyway.

    SOG — the Sea of Green

    The opposite philosophy. Instead of maximising per-plant yield, you maximise plants-per-square-metre. Many small plants (often 9–16 per m²) are flowered as soon as they root, with no training, each producing a single cola. SOG maximises tent throughput per week and is popular in commercial contexts. In private cultivation with 3-plant legal limits, SOG is usually the wrong strategy — SCROG almost always outperforms it in that constraint.

    Canopy management as a mindset

    SCROG and SOG are only two answers to the same question: how do I make sure every photon hitting the tent lands on a productive surface? Canopy management is the ongoing daily discipline of tucking leaves out of the way, removing shaded popcorn, and keeping the top layer flat. A well-managed canopy is worth more than any single expensive piece of equipment.

    Pros

    • SCROG: near-perfect light distribution, highest per-plant yield in small tents.
    • SCROG + LST: incredibly forgiving for beginners once the net is up.
    • SOG: fastest tent turnover; short veg times.

    Cons

    • SCROG: makes access to individual plants difficult; watering and inspection require planning.
    • SCROG on autoflowers is risky — no room to recover if the net timing is off.
    • SOG: illegal in most private-use jurisdictions with plant-count limits.
