    1. What actually happens after the harvest — the biology

    A freshly cut cannabis plant is not dead. It is a wounded organism whose cells continue metabolising for days. Understanding this is the difference between drying by feel and drying with intent.

    The four processes running in parallel

    • Residual metabolism — the plant still burns starches and sugars, which taste harsh when smoked. A slow dry gives enzymes time to break these down.
    • Chlorophyll degradation — chlorophyll is what makes fresh flower taste "green" and smell like fresh-cut grass or hay. Enzymes break it down under humid, dark, cool conditions.
    • Water migration — moisture moves from the dense core of the bud outward to the surface. If the outside dries faster than water can migrate, you get a crispy shell around a wet inside.
    • Terpene stabilisation — monoterpenes (limonene, myrcene, pinene) are highly volatile and evaporate above 21 °C. Cool, dark, humid drying keeps them locked in.

    2. The moment right after harvest — decisions that lock in quality

    The first hour after cutting sets the trajectory. You have four decisions to make, and they interact.

    Decision 1 — Whole plant, branches, or bud-on-string?

    • Whole plant hang — slowest, most even dry. Best flavour, requires 1.5–2 m headroom. Ideal for premium quality.
    • Large branches — the standard for tents. Cut at the main stem, hang from a wire or drying line. Excellent balance of speed and quality.
    • Individual buds on drying racks — fastest (5–7 days), useful in extremely humid climates, but risks over-drying and flattens buds.

    Decision 3 — Remove fan leaves?

    Always remove the large fan leaves at harvest. They hold no trichomes and only slow airflow. Keep the sugar leaves attached during the hang — they act as a natural humidity buffer that protects the buds beneath. Trim sugar leaves during the dry-trim step later.

    Decision 4 — Airflow direction and intensity

    Airflow must be indirect and gentle. Never point a fan directly at drying buds — the outer surface will dry within hours while the core remains 70 % water. Use an oscillating fan aimed at a wall or the floor, so the air moves around the buds without hitting them.

    3. How to dry cannabis correctly — the four parameters

    Drying is not "leave it in a cupboard for two weeks". It is the active control of four variables. Get all four right and the flower dries evenly from the inside out, chlorophyll breaks down, monoterpenes stay intact, and the buds arrive at the jar step ready to cure.

    How long should drying take?

    The target is 10–14 days from cut to jar. Anything under 7 days is too fast — you will trap chlorophyll and get hay. Anything over 20 days risks mould unless your RH is exceptionally well controlled. If your room finishes the buds in 5 days, raise the RH; if it takes 3 weeks, add gentle indirect airflow.

    The stem-snap test

    Forget calendars. The reliable test is mechanical: bend the smallest side branch. If it bends silently, wait. If it snaps with a soft audible pop but the bud itself is still slightly elastic between your fingers, you are ready to jar. If it snaps like a dry twig and the bud crumbles, you have over-dried.

    4. The most common drying mistakes (and why they ruin flower)

    Mistake 1 — Drying in a warm room ("it goes faster")

    Above 22 °C, monoterpenes — the light, fruity, citrusy notes — evaporate. You will still get flower, but it will smell flat and generic. Every degree above 20 °C costs terpene complexity.

    Mistake 2 — Fan pointed at the buds

    Direct airflow dries the surface in hours while the core is still 70 % water. Two days later the outside feels ready but the inside is soaking wet. The result: mouldy centres or a permanent hay smell after the outside seals in the chlorophyll.

    Mistake 3 — Drying in a cardboard box or paper bag

    Cardboard absorbs moisture unevenly and pulls RH below 45 %. You get a fast, uneven dry with no buffer against fluctuations. Boxes are a rescue tool for the last 24 hours, not a drying method.

    Mistake 4 — Attic, garage or unheated basement

    Extreme temperature swings between day and night cause condensation cycles inside the buds. Every night the water re-migrates from core to surface; every day it evaporates. Terpenes exit with each cycle.

    5. When does the cure actually begin?

    The transition from drying to curing is the single most-fumbled moment. Jar too wet and you grow mould. Jar too dry and there is nothing left to cure — the buds will just sit there, brittle, aromaless.

    1. The stem-snap: small side stems pop softly, the main stem still bends.
    2. The squeeze: the bud is dry on the outside but leaves a faint fingerprint dent that springs back within a second.

    6. Curing correctly — where premium quality is made

    Curing is a controlled micro-fermentation. Inside a sealed glass jar at 62 % RH, the residual moisture in the bud creates a stable water-activity environment where enzymes finish breaking down chlorophyll, starches and unwanted chlorophyll by-products. It is the same principle that separates fresh tobacco from a well-aged cigar, or grape juice from wine.

    Why glass and not plastic?

    Plastic containers (including "food-grade" ones) off-gas plasticisers, hold static that grabs trichomes, and are permeable to oxygen and moisture over months. Wide-mouth mason jars in clear or amber glass are the standard. Metal tins acquire a metallic taste; wooden humidors need to be cannabis-dedicated or the flavour transfers.

    Fill level and pack density

    Fill each jar loosely to about 75 %. Buds should shift when you tumble the jar. A jar packed to the neck cannot release moisture during burping and can also crush trichomes.

    When is the cure "done"?

    There is no hard end. Minimum for smokable quality is 2 weeks; the real difference kicks in at 4–6 weeks; the ceiling for most strains sits around 3 months, after which changes become subtle. Some strains (heavy Kush lines, GG#4 phenos) keep improving for 6+ months. Sample every 2 weeks — the moment you notice a rich, sweet, three-dimensional aroma with no grass or hay, the cure has arrived.

    7. Long-term storage — the third link nobody talks about

    A perfect cure means nothing if the jar sits on a sunny shelf. Storage is the third and final link. It does not improve the flower — its only job is to slow the decay of what you have built.

    Shelf-life at a glance

    8. Quality control — how to tell if you nailed it

    The sensory checklist

    • Smell — sweet, fruity, complex, distinct terpenes. No grass, no hay, no ammonia.
    • Touch — outside dry, inside slightly elastic, bud rebounds after light squeeze.
    • Sound — a small stem snaps softly; a fingernail leaves a mark but does not sink in.
    • Burn — white ash, holds an even coal, no re-lighting needed. Black ash means residual chlorophyll or nutrients.
    • Smoke — smooth on the throat, terpenes noticeable on the exhale, no cough at low doses.
    • Colour — deep greens, purples or ambers preserved. Brown across the board means oxidation.

    9. The hay smell — the #1 problem, explained and fixed

    "Why does my weed smell like hay?" is one of the most searched cannabis questions. The answer is almost always the same: chlorophyll was locked in by drying too fast, too hot, or with too little humidity. Water evaporated before the enzymes could break the chlorophyll down.

    Can you rescue hay smell?

    1. Rehydrate carefully. Add a Boveda 69 % pack for 48 hours and burp twice daily. The extra moisture reactivates the enzymes.
    2. Extend the cure. If hay smell fades by week 4, keep going. Many jars normalise between weeks 6 and 10.

    Should I use a vacuum sealer?

    Can I freeze cured cannabis?

    Does temperature matter during curing?

    Can I cure in the fridge?
